SECURITY TRAINING AND Education Program (STEP)

Building Canada’s Security Capacity – One Professional at a Time

In today’s evolving threat environment, the Government of Canada security professionals play a critical role in safeguarding people, assets, information, and infrastructure. The STEP program developed by Savoie Security Associates (SSA) equips security officials with the advanced knowledge, skills and confidence needed to address both day-to-day operational challenges and national security threats.

STEP is a recognized development milestone designed to motivate, encourage, and support participants in achieving security certification. By completing any eight SSA courses with a minimum of 70% exam score, participants will earn the STEP Certificate of Completion – a credential that strengthens professional credibility and signals readiness to take on greater responsibilities in Canada’s security landscape.

National Security Value

These courses are built on the realities of Canada’s security environment, including:

  • Protecting against threats and hostile activities

  • Safeguarding sensitive information and critical infrastructure

  • Ensuring operational continuity in emergencies

  • Mitigating risks to Canada’s national interests at home an abroad

Learning Outcomes

Through a combination of expert instruction, practical case studies and peer collaboration, participants will learn how to:

  • Enhance operational resilience across government programs

  • Influence security decisions at senior levels

  • Align security strategies with departmental and national priorities

  • Build networks that strengthen interdepartmental cooperation

These training courses will not only strengthen your knowledge and understanding so that you can build a robust and resilient security program but also enhance your career potential and professional credibility.

As one student wrote, “The best learning experience was sitting in a classroom with instructors and peers to discuss real-world application. Collaborating with my peers on security scenarios, case studies, lead to interactive discussions with them as well as the instructors.”

Another student wrote, “One of the most impactful aspects of the journey was how seamlessly the course content aligned with the development and strategic priorities of the Security Directorate.”
