COURSE SUMMARY This course is one of the essential courses required for Security Certification under the Infrastructure Resilience Research Group, IRRG, Office of the Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Design, Carleton University.

The Fundamentals of Security Course (FOS) provides participants with the spectrum of security knowledge essential to understand and implement security policies, directives, standards. Participants will learn about specific security requirements, roles and responsibilities and interdependent elements of screening, physical and information security and safeguards, emergency preparedness and business continuity planning.

Key concepts that form the foundation of security will be identified and discussed and participants will learn how to enhance the security posture of their organization by discussing the value added of these concepts and how to apply them on a day-to-day basis. The essence of a security program is to provide a safe and secure work environment where people are protected from harm, assets are safeguarded from compromise and there are strategies in place for the continuity of critical services.

The course also provides an overview of security management so that participants understand the interrelationship, integration, and management of security operations within the organizational framework.

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the key elements and importance of the Policy on Government Security and its related standards and directives including roles and responsibilities.

  • Explain the key concepts of security and how they support the security requirements to protect people, assets, systems, and continuity of critical services.

  • Discuss the interdependencies and integrative nature of all elements of security.

  • Create effective working relationships with internal and external networks.

  • Gain an understanding of the management issues related to establishing and maintaining a security program.

Who should attend:

The Fundamentals of Security Course has been designed for employees working in any of the functions of security; managers who are responsible for security but have not worked in operations; corporate staff who are involved with the staffing positions, accommodation and design requirements, information management including access to information and privacy, or occupational health and safety; and others who are interested in broadening their scope of security knowledge.
