COURSE SUMMARY This course is one of the elective courses for Security Certification under the Infrastructure Resilience Research Group, IRRG, Office of the Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Design, Carleton University.

The Safe and Secure Travels course provides participants with the knowledge required to successfully prepare a travel plan, stay safe during travel, protect sensitive information and assets while in travel status and brief and guide travellers accordingly. 

​

The course focuses on travel security planning, learning the steps to take so that you do not become a target, exercising sound security measures so that assets and information are safeguarded, being aware of the environment and the surrounding sensitivities, and understanding the criminal elements and national security concerns.  

​

There will be discussions on airport security and clearing customs, hotel security, transportation vulnerabilities, applicability of culture, customs and laws, use of mobile communication devices and importance of an emergency contact list and a back up plan.  Participants will learn that early and on-going planning, continuous situational awareness and attention and alertness are critical to successful travelling and safe journeys.

At the end of the course you will be able to:

• Prepare a travel security checklist (before, during, after)

• Conduct a situational/environmental threat and risk assessment

• Understand the threat hazards (criminal, national security, etc.)

• Explain the benefits of a low-profile presence (safe behaviours)

• Maximize protection of information and assets

• Consider travel preparation, event response, and incident reporting requirements

• Prepare a quick reference contact list for assistance

• Understand that YOU are in charge of your travel safety and security

• Stay safe, enjoy your travel experience and guide others accordingly
